The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has announced new sugarcane prices for farmers, with the rates taking effect immediately.

In a statement dated July 21, 2025, the Interim Sugarcane Pricing Committee confirmed the approval of an increase in the price of cane from Ksh 5,500 to Ksh 5,750 per tonne.

The decision was made during the Committee’s second meeting held on July 17, 2025, after reviewing the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices between April and June 2025.

This marks a Ksh 250 increase per tonne, raising the total increment within the last four months to Ksh 500—an overall 9.5% rise since April. The move is expected to significantly benefit sugarcane farmers, particularly in western Kenya.

“The adjustment promises more favourable earnings, improved financial stability, and renewed motivation for farmers ahead of peak harvest seasons. With enhanced returns at stake, growers can now walk into their local banks with a bigger smile and a stronger bargaining position,” said Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Kagwe.

Kagwe reiterated his commitment to revitalizing the sugar industry through continuous price reviews and expanded support for farmers.

The 4th Interim Sugarcane Pricing Committee, which was appointed on January 9, 2025, by the Cabinet Secretary, is tasked with ensuring fair and timely pricing that reflects market dynamics.

The Kenya Sugar Board, also backing the move, emphasized that the revised prices are a step toward ensuring sugarcane growers are justly compensated.

“This progressive move reflects our commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector and ensuring fair compensation for the backbone of Kenya’s sugar industry,” the Board noted.

Stakeholders across the sugar sector have been directed to comply with the new prices and ensure prompt payments to farmers.

This latest revision follows a previous increment announced on May 26, 2025, when the price was raised from Ksh 5,300 to Ksh 5,500 per tonne.

The government has assured continued efforts to stabilize the sector and empower farmers through predictable and fair returns.
