Parents of students at Litein Boys High School have been directed to collectively pay Ksh69 million to cover damages resulting from a violent student strike that left parts of the institution severely damaged.

According to a report by the Parents Association (PA), each parent will now contribute Ksh49,699 to facilitate the reconstruction of affected facilities.

The figure was reached after a joint assessment involving the Parents Association, the Board of Management (BOM), regional engineers, and teachers.

The initial bill of quantities (BQ) was Ksh63,338,665, but an additional Ksh6 million in unaccounted costs pushed the total to Ksh69,038,665.

The final breakdown included Ksh41,929,610 for structural repairs, Ksh27,281,785 for suppliers and teachers’ compensation, and Ksh367,400 for consumables.

The total cost was later revised slightly to Ksh69,578,795 after the assessment team agreed to exclude painting expenses, as the existing paintwork was deemed intact.

While the board has moved swiftly to implement the payment plan, some parents have expressed frustration, accusing the school administration of prioritizing fines over addressing the root causes of the unrest.

“Our PA resolution to the board was declined. The causes of the strike were not discussed, and the board appears more interested in collecting payments than addressing the welfare of our children,” part of a statement from concerned parents read.

The unrest, which led to the destruction of classrooms, dormitories, and administrative offices, has reignited debate over how schools handle discipline, accountability, and recovery after such incidents.

Education officials are expected to meet in the coming days to review the matter and ensure that the rebuilding process proceeds transparently while addressing the issues that triggered the chaos.
