The National Police Service (NPS) has appealed for calm and restraint among residents of Huruma, Nairobi, following violent confrontations that left a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student dead and two vehicles set ablaze.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the unrest stemmed from a robbery incident reported at Huruma Police Station at around 8:00 a.m. on February 7.

According to police, a complainant alleged that five young men known to him attacked and robbed him of Ksh1,800 in cash and a silver chain, threatening to kill him during the ordeal.

Officers responded to the report and arrested two suspects the same morning. Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects later that evening at about 7:30 p.m.

Police said that during the second arrest, one of the suspects raised an alarm, attracting a hostile crowd of youths who began throwing stones and other projectiles at officers in an attempt to prevent the arrests.

In response, police reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd.

Shortly afterward, officers received information that a female student from the Kenya Medical Training College had been fatally injured during the confrontation.

The student’s death sparked renewed unrest in Huruma, with residents torching two vehicles and engaging in violent protests that persisted throughout Sunday.

In its statement, the NPS acknowledged the tragic death of the student and urged the public to allow investigations and accountability processes to take their course. The service assured the public that a “full documentation and accountability process” was underway and called on anyone with information that could aid investigations to come forward.

Police further confirmed that the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) had taken over the investigations and was on the ground early Sunday morning, conducting inquiries with the full cooperation of the police.

The NPS urged Huruma residents to refrain from further acts of lawlessness and to allow due process to unfold, warning that continued violence would only undermine justice efforts.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased student has demanded justice, saying she was on the verge of resuming her tertiary studies at the time of the fatal shooting.
