What was meant to be a night of music and fun turned into a tense standoff early Saturday morning at a popular entertainment spot in Nakuru, following an altercation involving former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala.
The drama reportedly began around 3 a.m. when Malala, who has been in the spotlight over his alleged role in scripting the controversial Butere Girls play Echoes of War, entered the club and made his way to the VIP section. His presence was quickly acknowledged by the club’s hype man, triggering a wave of anti-government chants from sections of the crowd that lasted nearly five minutes.
Moments later, a group of unidentified men stormed the club, heading straight for Malala’s table and attempting to confront him physically. Bouncers and some members of Malala’s entourage quickly intervened, containing the situation and escorting the group out of the VIP section.

“The bouncers at the club immediately came in and diffused the situation. The unknown men were escorted outside, and Malala remained in the club,” a source told Mtaa Wangu.
Club management then alerted the police, who responded swiftly and escorted Malala from the premises for his safety. However, by the time officers arrived, the group of men had allegedly vandalized Malala’s vehicle, which was parked outside. The damaged vehicle was towed to Nakuru Central Police Station for investigation.
“The entire incident lasted about 30 minutes,” added the source.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with lingering questions about how the group knew Malala’s whereabouts and managed to identify his vehicle among many in the club’s parking lot. It is also unclear whether the attack was politically motivated, especially in light of the recent controversy surrounding the Echoes of War school play, which authorities had flagged for allegedly inciting unrest.
Nakuru East Police Commander Samson Andaje confirmed the incident but declined to offer further comment.
As investigations continue, the incident has sparked fresh debate over political tensions, freedom of expression in art, and the safety of public figures in entertainment spaces.
