Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dared Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to arrest him, following mounting pressure from a section of Kenya Kwanza leaders who accuse him of sponsoring chaos during the June 25 Gen Z memorial protests.

Speaking on Friday, June 27, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, the former deputy president said he was not in hiding and dared the state to take action if indeed there was evidence linking him to any wrongdoing.

“Kipchumba Murkomen, you say you want to arrest me tonight. I am here, you know where I am, you don’t even have to wait for this interview. You can come after this,” Gachagua declared.

“But I want to tell you, the people have had enough. This persecution and humiliation of the community is too much, and I don’t think it is going to happen again. The people are not going to allow it.”

Gachagua was responding to allegations from senior government officials and legislators who claimed he had financed gangs to disrupt the protests.

The demonstrations, which were initially meant to honour those who lost their lives during last year’s June 25 protests, turned violent in several parts of the capital, leading to deaths, injuries, and massive property destruction.

Murkomen, who toured damaged government facilities in Nairobi on Thursday, June 26, blamed certain political figures for sponsoring violence.

However, Gachagua dismissed the claims and turned the heat on Murkomen, accusing the CS of being intoxicated by power and wealth.

“Kipchumba Murkomen is a young, excited Cabinet Secretary full of himself because of money and power. He cannot give instructions to police to shoot and kill,” said Gachagua.

He further questioned the credibility of the government’s intelligence, arguing that if indeed there was evidence that he had funded criminal gangs, security agencies would have acted before the situation escalated.

“I don’t know how fragile this government is. That a CS Interior is walking in the streets of Nairobi in the morning, and you are saying that was an attempted coup. If they had intelligence that goons were being paid by Rigathi Gachagua or anyone else, why did they not arrest these goons?” he posed.

He went on to argue that any group directly linked to him would have already faced police brutality or arrests. “If they were my goons today, they would have been shot dead or in custody,” he said.

According to Gachagua, the looting in downtown Nairobi happened after 6:00 pm and, in his view, under the watch of law enforcement officers.

He specifically mentioned areas like Nyamakima, River Road, Taveta Road, and Luthuli Avenue, where he claimed the destruction occurred in darkness.

“I think the CS Interior must respect the people of Kenya. It is evident that in Nairobi, the real goons came after 6:00 pm, and downtown Nairobi, in Nyamakima, River Road, Taveta Road, and Luthuli Avenue, the havoc and looting were done in darkness under the supervision of the police. Why were these gangs not shot?” Gachagua asked.

The political tensions continue to rise amid increasing public frustration over governance, economic hardship, and state response to recent protests.

Gachagua, once Ruto’s deputy, has now rebranded as a vocal opposition figure, accusing the current administration of intimidation and political persecution.
