A majority of elected Members of Parliament from Bungoma County have thrown their support behind Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi as their preferred candidate for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in 2027.
Speaking during a press briefing held in the local dialect on Wednesday, Sirisia MP John Waluke, who also serves as the chairperson of the Western Kenya MPs Caucus, revealed that eight out of the nine elected MPs from Bungoma had unanimously endorsed Wanyonyi.
The only absentee, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, is said to have skipped the meeting due to his own political ambitions for the seat currently held by Governor Kenneth Lusaka.

“As Bungoma people, we, the Members of Parliament elected from this county, have met and agreed on the need to safeguard the development and future of our county. All nine of us, except Didmus Wekesa Barasa who has shown interest in the governor’s seat, are united in backing Tim Wanyonyi,” Waluke stated.
The MPs plan to consolidate support further by engaging all elected and nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in a strategic meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Tim Wanyonyi’s Bungoma home.
The gathering is expected to start at 10:00 a.m., with attendees required to arrive by 9:30 a.m. for a closed-door discussion on the county’s leadership and development trajectory.
Waluke emphasized that Bungoma’s leadership has failed to utilize the county’s vast resources effectively, leaving residents grappling with underdevelopment.
“Our people have suffered for too long. Despite receiving billions in revenue allocation, Bungoma lacks roads, water, and meaningful development. Tim Wanyonyi represents a fresh start and the hope to redeem Bungoma from stagnation,” Waluke added.
The MPs present at the Wednesday meeting included Jack Wamboka (Bumula), John Makali (Kanduyi), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), Martin Wanyonyi Pepela alias Investor (Webuye East), Fred Kapondi (Mt Elgon), Majimbo Kalasinga (Kabuchai), John Chikati (Tongaren), and Waluke himself.
While Wanyonyi has been widely viewed as a front-runner in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, his possible return to his home county of Bungoma for the 2027 elections is gaining traction among Western Kenya leaders.
The upcoming meeting with MCAs is expected to be a key step in building a unified front as Bungoma’s elected leaders position Wanyonyi as the man to restore the county’s “lost glory.”
