There was drama at Kimorori Grounds in Kenol, Murang’a County, on Monday afternoon after Maragua MP Mary Wamaua was chased away by angry residents opposed to the government’s plan to develop the public sports facility.
In videos circulating online, residents could be seen shouting and charging towards the MP, who was escorted away by her security team, including a police officer.
The confrontation followed mounting tensions over the planned construction of government facilities on the land, which locals have long used for sports and recreation.

Reports indicate that the government intends to use the grounds for a project that includes the construction of sub-county headquarters, an ICT centre, and a modern court.
The Maragua NG-CDF committee reportedly allocated Ksh24 million for the development in 2022.
However, the project has faced stiff opposition from youth and community members, who argue that the grounds are a vital space for talent development, recreation, and mental health.
They fear that losing the field will push many young people into crime and social vices.
“We want to grow our talents, but now they are taking over this field; what will we do? Sometimes we even have up to 15 teams playing here after hustling during the day. Where will they go?” a resident asked.
Others suggested that instead of repurposing the entire field, the government should focus on improving the facility with washrooms and changing rooms.
Speaking to reporters earlier this month, MP Wamaua defended the project, insisting that the land had been legally earmarked and would not be grabbed for affordable housing as alleged.
“How can one grab the security powerhouse of a sub-county and construct their own houses? We are building government offices,” she stated, vowing that the project would continue despite public protests.
The Kimorori Grounds standoff highlights the growing tensions between government development plans and communities fighting to protect public recreational spaces.
