The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) has voiced serious concerns over the government’s recent decision to lower the price of unga (maize flour), calling it insufficient in light of rising living costs that continue to burden ordinary Kenyans.

Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit and other bishops expressed their alarm following the 27th Ordinary Session of the Provincial Synod at All Saints Cathedral.

During the gathering, church leaders acknowledged that while the government’s move to reduce the price of maize flour had been welcomed, many households still cannot afford basic food staples.

They emphasized that the relief must go further, pointing out that families are being pushed to their financial limits by high prices for other essential items like fuel, transport, and utilities.

The bishops urged the government to consider more comprehensive measures to alleviate the cost-of-living crisis.

Among their recommendations were enhanced social safety nets, more robust agricultural policy support, and better regulation of supply chains that influence food prices.

The ACK’s statement comes amid rising public discontent as inflation, especially for food and energy, remains stubbornly high.

Many Kenyans have been skipping meals or buying smaller quantities of staple foods in response to shrinking household incomes.

Government officials have in recent weeks defended the price adjustment, saying it reflects improved maize supplies and efforts to stabilise markets.

However, critics argue that without parallel interventions addressing broader inflation drivers, the relief will remain marginal.

All eyes are now on Nairobi as citizens wait to see whether the government will adopt more aggressive economic relief strategies or risk growing unrest triggered by continuing economic hardship.
