A 50-year-old woman from Isongo B village in Butula, Busia County, was found murdered following a domestic altercation, in a case that has shocked the local community. Police are now pursuing the woman’s husband, who is the main suspect in the April 20 killing.

According to officers who visited the scene, the victim was discovered lying in a pool of blood with deep injuries on the forehead, back of the head, and right hand.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the murder stemmed from ongoing domestic disputes between the couple. The body was moved to a nearby mortuary pending a postmortem examination as police intensify the manhunt for the suspect.

In a separate incident in Sotik, Bomet County, police are also investigating the killing of a 38-year-old woman, Beatrice Ng’eno, who was allegedly strangled to death by her husband after a heated confrontation.

The incident occurred inside their home, where police say the man locked the door from the inside before allegedly carrying out the attack. Officers who responded to the scene found the woman’s body with blood oozing from her nose and mouth. Her remains were taken to Kapkatet Hospital morgue as detectives continue their probe.

These two murders add to a disturbing trend of rising gender-based violence cases across the country, many of which result in femicide.

While police acknowledge the spike in killings targeting women, they maintain that murder, regardless of the victim’s gender, is clearly defined in law and must be addressed with equal urgency.

In response to the growing concern, President William Ruto in January 2025 appointed a 42-member task force to investigate and propose solutions to the alarming increase in femicide cases.
