Acting ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga on Thursday, October 30, held a high-profile meeting with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, signaling renewed efforts to strengthen cohesion within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
In a statement after the meeting, Oburu said the discussion focused on enhancing unity and ensuring that every voice within the party—especially youthful leadership—is heard and represented.
“Our discussion centered on strengthening unity and inclusivity within the ODM Party,” he stated.
“Hon. Babu Owino symbolizes the vibrant energy and determination of our youth. He has a promising future, and we are together.”

The meeting follows recent assurances by Oburu that Babu will receive a fair chance in the ODM nomination process for the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race, amid speculation that the youthful MP might be sidelined.
On Tuesday, October 28, Oburu moved to calm concerns, affirming that Babu remains a loyal party member who should not fear being denied the ticket if he wins the primaries.
“If he wins the nominations, there is absolutely no reason he wouldn’t get the ticket,” Oburu said earlier.
“He shouldn’t walk away… We want the Nairobi governor race to be open and competitive.”
He emphasized that ODM is looking for strong, visionary, and dynamic leaders, describing Babu as fitting that mold.
Assurances and Party Stability
Oburu said he would personally ensure continued dialogue with Babu to avert tension and preserve party unity, particularly at a time when ODM is undergoing leadership transition following the passing of former party leader Raila Odinga.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu paid a courtesy visit to Oburu at his home. The senators said they sought to offer support as he takes on ODM’s leadership role.
“We went to pay our respects and offer comfort, especially as he takes on the great responsibility of stepping into the late Raila Odinga’s shoes,” Thang’wa said.
He added that the visit also offered young leaders a chance to gain insights from Oburu’s decades-long political experience.
ODM Eyes Stability Ahead of 2027
The meeting between Oburu and Babu signals ODM’s intent to consolidate support and prevent internal fallout as the 2027 political season gains momentum. With succession politics and party restructuring underway, ODM leadership is working to retain influential youthful figures and stabilize the party base.
Babu Owino has previously declared his ambition to run for Nairobi Governor, positioning himself as the flag-bearer for youth leadership and urban transformation.
As internal engagements continue, ODM is expected to roll out a broader consultation framework to strengthen party unity during the transition phase.
