Claims that Siaya County Governor James Orengo has resigned from his position due to political tensions or health issues are false.
Despite the circulation of a letter dated August 4, 2025, allegedly signed by Orengo announcing his resignation on health grounds, there is no credible evidence from official sources or reliable media outlets confirming such a move.
The rumors appear to have been fueled by Orengo’s prolonged absence from public events since June 23, 2025, when he attended a Senate Public Accounts Committee meeting.

His absence led to a petition from Siaya resident Julius Oluoch, who claimed it had caused a governance crisis and stalled county operations, including the approval of the 2025/2026 budget.
Reports have also pointed to tensions between Orengo and his deputy, William Oduol, as well as past protests in April 2025 in which some residents demanded his resignation over his criticism of ODM’s cooperation with UDA.
Social media posts have amplified the speculation, with Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai claiming on May 26 that Orengo was in India receiving treatment for a liver condition, while a YouTube video uploaded on August 3, 2025, asked “What happened to James Orengo before India?” However, none of these claims have been backed by credible reporting from outlets.
On July 27, 2025, ODM leader Raila Odinga addressed the matter during a funeral service in Ugunja, assuring the public that Orengo was in good health and would soon return to office.
Raila’s statement directly contradicted the resignation rumors, and no official statement from the Siaya County Government has confirmed his departure.
In the weeks before his absence, Orengo was actively involved in county leadership, including a June 5, 2025, meeting with President William Ruto where he secured over KSh 5 billion in development funding for Siaya.
Ongoing county initiatives listed on the Siaya County Government’s website also indicate that he remains in office.
While Governor Orengo’s absence has raised genuine concerns about governance in Siaya, the available evidence does not support claims of his resignation.
Until such information is confirmed by the County Government or reputable media houses, these reports should be regarded as false. Residents and observers are advised to rely on verified information and treat viral social media posts with caution.
