FKF’s Response and Possible Sanctions

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee will take up the matter and will determine the appropriate course of action. Possible outcomes include disciplinary measures against players involved in the altercation and a ruling on the match result.

According to the FKF rules on misconduct, clubs are responsible for ensuring adequate security at their venues. Rule 9.1.2.1 states that “it will be presumed, unless the contrary is proved, that a club has failed to provide adequate security at its venue where the spectators commit acts of improper behavior.” Additionally, acts such as pitch invasion (9.1.2.12.1) and causing the abandonment of a match (9.1.2.12.2) are explicitly recognized as offenses that warrant disciplinary action.

Many visiting teams have previously raised concerns about the behavior of Sigalagala FC supporters, describing them as a security threat. Opposing teams have often complained about hostile treatment, and this latest incident has further intensified scrutiny on the club’s fanbase.

Update with Club Statements

Green Commandos released an official statement condemning the events, saying:

“Our match against Sigalagala Polytechnic was unfortunately called off due to incidents of fan trouble. We strongly condemn football hooliganism and demand a thorough investigation into these unacceptable actions. We remain committed to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all our fans and players. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Stay tuned for further updates.”

On the other hand, Sigalagala FC defended itself, placing the blame on Green Commandos’ captain:

“We condemn with the highest terms possible any kind of hooliganism in football. Our match against Green Commandos was abandoned at the 72nd minute with our team leading 2-0 following an ugly scene that occurred after Green Commandos’ captain punched our player. The matter lies with FKF, and we will communicate once the due process is followed. It is good to note that the incident was a player-to-player altercation, and no fan touched a player. Green Commandos’ captain (jersey number 5) punched two of our players. Discipline must be maintained in football.”

The FKF’s decision on the matter will be closely watched, as concerns over security and discipline in Kenyan football continue to grow.
