Gor Mahia Title Hopes All But Over After Derby Draw With AFC Leopards

If there was still a glimmer of hope for Gor Mahia to defend their FKF Premier League crown, it now hangs by the thinnest of threads following a 1-1 draw with arch-rivals AFC Leopards at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Monday, June 2.

Coming into the rescheduled Mashemeji Derby, K’Ogalo knew that only victory would realistically keep their fading title hopes alive with just two games remaining.

But despite the advantage of playing in their home turf, they couldn’t break down a determined Leopards side coached by the ever-impressive Fred Ambani.

Gor Mahia started brightly and took the lead in the first half through Austin Odhiambo, who rifled home a low shot from distance to ignite the home crowd.

However, AFC Leopards clawed their way back into the contest immediately after the break, leveling matters through Brian Wanyama just four minutes into the second half.

The result preserved Ambani’s unbeaten record in the derby and marked the second consecutive draw between the two fierce rivals this season.

But while bragging rights were shared, the real loss was Gor Mahia’s — as the draw delivered a crushing blow to their bid for a third straight title.

With just two matches left, Gor Mahia now trail league leaders Kenya Police by four points and will need a miracle to reclaim the crown. Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno’s men must win both of their remaining games and hope that Police falter in both of theirs — a scenario that now seems highly unlikely.

Kenya Police, who boast a superior goal difference (+2), could all but secure their maiden FKF Premier League title with just a draw against Shabana on Wednesday, June 11.

Should they manage even that, it will mark a stunning season turnaround under coach Ettiene Ndayiragije, and a painful collapse for the once-dominant K’Ogalo.

The title may not be mathematically decided yet — but for Gor Mahia, time and fortune are quickly running out.
