A somber mood has engulfed Kanga area along the Migori-Rongo road following the tragic death of a 19-year-old student who was preparing to join university later this year.
The deceased, identified as Tony Onyango, was fatally hit by a police vehicle on Saturday evening while riding a motorcycle with a minor passenger. According to eyewitnesses, the police vehicle was speeding when it struck the motorcycle, killing Tony on the spot. The minor, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries and was rushed to Rongo Sub-County Hospital for medical attention.
Eyewitnesses further reported that the police vehicle did not stop after the collision, instead speeding off toward Rongo town, leaving behind a scene of devastation and grief.

Confirming the incident, South Kamagambo Location Chief David Onyango expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that the student had just come from a local cyber café where he had gone to submit an online university course application.
“It’s truly heartbreaking. This young man had gone to apply for a course, full of hope for the future, only to have his life cut short in such a senseless manner,” the chief stated.
Chief Onyango confirmed that the vehicle was being driven at high speed at the time of the accident and urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
Tony’s death has sparked outrage in the community, with locals demanding accountability and transparency from the police service. They called for a thorough probe into the matter and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of road safety measures, especially involving official government vehicles.
