The Senate has voted to dismiss the impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Hassan, effectively ending proceedings initiated by the Isiolo County Assembly.

In a late-night vote on Tuesday, 31 Senators supported terminating the process, while 12 opposed the decision.

Governor Guyo’s legal team, led by Advocate Elisha Ongoya, raised a successful preliminary objection, arguing that the impeachment did not legally take place.

Ongoya told the Senate that the Hansard presented by the County Assembly had not been certified and that no video evidence had been provided to prove the motion was valid.

He compared the case to that of Kericho Governor Erick Mutai, whose impeachment attempt was previously dropped for similar procedural issues.

“The County Assembly has not presented any video evidence to that effect, which shows that what has been brought here was cooked,” Ongoya told Senators. He added that the process lacked authenticity and should be declared null and void.

The impeachment motion, brought by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana, accused Governor Guyo of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Among the claims were stalled development projects, failure to meet revenue targets, and an inflated executive structure with 36 advisors and 31 chief officers—an alleged mismatch with Isiolo’s limited budget.

The motion also cited violations of Chapter Six of the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, and the Public Officers’ Ethics Act.

Additional grievances included derogatory remarks directed at Senator Fatuma Dullo and Governor Guyo’s alleged failure to honor Senate summonses.

However, the defense team strongly challenged the legality of the impeachment, pointing out the absence of documented sittings in the County Assembly and highlighting a High Court order dated June 25, 2025, which barred the Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment process.

These procedural flaws proved key in convincing the majority of Senators to halt the motion.

With the case dismissed, political focus now shifts to Isiolo, where Governor Guyo is expected to rebuild fractured relationships with the County Assembly.

Political observers believe the episode has exposed underlying tensions in the county, some of which are rooted in long-standing political and clan rivalries.

Reactions online have been mixed—while some citizens view the Senate’s decision as a victory for due process and fairness, others have expressed frustration, arguing that core issues of governance remain unresolved.

As Isiolo navigates the aftermath of this failed impeachment, the governor’s ability to restore unity and deliver on his development agenda may determine his political future, especially with the 2027 elections on the horizon.
