Residents of the Makaburini area in Kakamega Town were left in shock after a man allegedly beat his wife to death following a domestic dispute over missing money.

According to witnesses, the suspect, identified as Kassim Asman Wamatsa, accused his wife of stealing KSh 5,400 and a mobile phone before the argument turned violent on Sunday night.

“The husband, Kassim Asman, started beating the wife around 7 p.m., claiming she had stolen his KSh 5,400 and a phone. We heard her crying in pain, but because they fight all the time, no one intervened. This time, it seems he went too far,” a neighbour told reporters.

Confirming the incident, Kakamega County Police Commander Vincent Cherutich said the suspect later transported his wife’s lifeless body to Kakamega General and Referral Hospital on a motorbike, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cherutich added that the suspect falsely claimed his wife had been attacked by neighbours before registering her body at the mortuary and disappearing.

“The suspect ferried his wife to the hospital, but when they arrived, it was confirmed that she was already dead. Medical officers established that she had multiple injuries on her body,” Cherutich said.

Shocked residents of Makaburini said the couple had a history of domestic violence. Area elder Alfred Amambia noted that the tragic incident was the culmination of long-standing marital conflict.

“We are surprised by the news that one of us here killed his wife and took her to the mortuary himself. The two have been fighting frequently,” Amambia said.

Following the incident, angry residents stormed the suspect’s house, destroying household items in protest before police arrived to disperse the crowd.

Law enforcement officers have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is said to operate as a shoe shiner at Muliro Gardens in Kakamega.
