Investigations into the murder of city lawyer Mbobu Kyalo have taken a dramatic twist after police arrested three people, including KANU Secretary General George Wainaina.

The three suspects, among them a man who reportedly had lunch with Kyalo shortly before he was killed, are being held in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred along Magadi Road, Nairobi, on the evening of September 9, 2025.

According to police sources, Wainaina was taken to Kileleshwa Police Station, while the other two suspects—believed to be close friends of the slain lawyer—are being held at Capitol Hill and Kilimani Police Stations.

Wainaina’s lawyer, Maulid Musa, confirmed the arrest, stating that detectives also found money at his client’s residence but insisted it was lawfully acquired.
“He was arrested at his home. The money found with my client, I cannot disclose the amount because it is his personal property, but it is legitimate,” Musa said.

Legal Fraternity Demands Justice

On Friday, September 12, members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) staged a nationwide Purple Ribbon March in memory of Kyalo. Advocates donned purple ribbons and carried placards calling for accountability and swift justice, stressing that no individual should be shielded from the law.

The march, held across major towns, reflected growing concern within the legal fraternity over rising attacks on lawyers in Kenya.

Autopsy Findings

Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor conducted an autopsy on Thursday, September 11, revealing that Kyalo died from excessive bleeding after sustaining eight gunshot wounds.

Two bullets were recovered during the examination for ballistic analysis, with one lodged in his left arm. The injuries, Oduor noted, included damage to neck vessels and spinal structures, pointing to deliberate targeting of lethal points.

“Most of the shots came from the right side of the body. There were gunpowder burns under the chin, showing the shots were fired at close range. The spinal and neck injuries caused massive bleeding, which led to his death,” Oduor said.

Investigations Ongoing

Detectives are piecing together Kyalo’s final moments and examining possible motives behind the attack, which has been described as a targeted killing. Police say the investigation remains active, with more arrests expected as forensic results come in.
