What began as peaceful Saba Saba Day demonstrations on Monday, July 7, 2025, spiraled into violent scenes in parts of Meru County, with major businesses targeted by goons masquerading as protesters.

The most devastating incident occurred at Magunas Supermarket, a well-known retail outlet in the region, which was set ablaze by rioters after they overpowered anti-riot police officers deployed to maintain order.

In another shocking act of lawlessness, a Kenya Red Cross vehicle, which had been stationed nearby to provide emergency medical aid, was also vandalised.

The attack on Magunas was part of a broader pattern of targeted vandalism that marred the day’s demonstrations.

However, the situation in Kitengela was more volatile, as demonstrators engaged in running battles with law enforcement, blocking roads and targeting businesses in the area.

The unrest comes amid growing nationwide frustration over economic conditions and governance, with Saba Saba Day—a date historically linked to political dissent—once again becoming a flashpoint for expression.

Authorities have condemned the violence, and investigations are reportedly underway to identify and arrest those involved in the destruction of property and attacks on emergency service providers.

As cleanup efforts begin, affected business owners now face the difficult task of rebuilding and recovering from the losses.
