President William Ruto has kept his promise to reward each Harambee Stars player with Ksh1 million following their 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the 2026 CHAN Qualifiers.
While visiting the team after the match at the Moi Sports Stadium, Kasarani, the Head of State personally congratulated the players for their commitment, resilience, and spirited performance.
Turning to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, the President humorously instructed him to pass by State House the following morning and collect the pledged reward on behalf of the team.

This means that by Monday morning, every Harambee Stars player will be Ksh1 million richer—a fulfilled promise that not only boosts morale but also signals a renewed era of support for national football.
Historic Incentives for Performance
Ahead of the match, President Ruto had unveiled a groundbreaking incentive structure to motivate the national team as they chase their first-ever qualification for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals.

In addition to the Sh1 million per win during the tournament, players will receive:
- Ksh500,000 for every draw,
- Ksh60 million if they reach the quarterfinals,
- Ksh70 million for the semifinals, and
- A staggering Ksh600 million if they go on to win the CHAN title.
“Nitawapanga, si mimi ndio Commander?” the President joked — Swahili for “I will sort you out, am I not the Commander?”
FKF later confirmed the President’s visit and pledge in an official statement, describing it as a bold and unprecedented move to support and grow Kenyan football.

Odhiambo’s Strike Secures Victory
The match’s decisive moment came just before halftime, when midfielder Austine Odhiambo curled a left-footed shot past the DRC goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations at a packed Kasarani Stadium and securing a crucial three points in Group A.
Coach McCarthy Praises Tactical Discipline
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy applauded his players’ discipline, especially in managing the second half against a strong Congolese side.
“Beating a team of DRC’s calibre is a huge result for us. Austine was brilliant, but I also want to single out Manzur Suleiman, who did a superb job in midfield. We converted him from centre-back to a holding midfielder, and he executed perfectly,” said McCarthy.
He added that Manzur’s presence freed up Alpha Onyango and Odhiambo to play more offensively, giving Kenya the edge.
Focus Shifts to Angola
With three points already secured, Kenya’s next test comes on Thursday against Angola in their second Group A fixture. A win would all but confirm a historic qualification to the CHAN knockout stages.
President Ruto’s fulfilled promise and bold incentive strategy have not only lifted the team’s spirits but may also signal a transformative chapter for sports funding and support in Kenya.
