Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has addressed the recent transfer of celebrated musician and police officer Samuel Muchoki Ndirangu, popularly known as Samidoh, from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) headquarters in Gilgil to the volatile Baringo County.

The move, which comes in the wake of a viral video showing the officer performing politically sensitive “Wantam” chants during a public event, has sparked widespread speculation that the transfer was a disciplinary measure prompted by his actions.

However, during a press briefing held on Wednesday, IG Kanja downplayed the controversy, stating that Samidoh’s reassignment was not unusual and should not be politicized.

“Transfers are a routine part of police service management,” Kanja said. “All officers, including Samidoh, are subject to redeployment depending on service demands and operational requirements. This is standard procedure.”

“Wantam” Chants Raise Eyebrows
The viral video, which shows Samidoh leading chants of “Wantam” — a slogan that has gained political undertones in recent months — stirred heated online debate. While some viewed his actions as an expression of freedom, others argued that uniformed officers must remain neutral and avoid involvement in political messaging.

The slogan, perceived by some as a rallying cry against the current administration, has become a flashpoint in the country’s charged political climate.

Though Kanja did not directly address the video or its contents, his comments suggested an effort to de-escalate the growing public scrutiny surrounding Samidoh’s reassignment.

From Gilgil to Bandit Territory
Samidoh’s new post places him in one of Kenya’s most dangerous regions — Baringo County — which continues to face persistent security challenges due to banditry and cattle rustling. His deployment is expected to bolster the region’s anti-bandit operations, drawing on his prior experience with ASTU.

The popular musician has long balanced his dual identity as a celebrated Kikuyu Benga artist and a law enforcement officer. His visibility in the public eye has often attracted both admiration and controversy.

Police Maintain Stance on Officer Conduct
Kanja reiterated the need for professionalism within the ranks of the police service, urging officers to remain apolitical while on duty.

“We expect all our officers to uphold the code of conduct and to act in ways that build public trust,” the IG noted. “Any concerns regarding an officer’s actions are reviewed through internal mechanisms.”

As the debate around Samidoh’s transfer continues, the National Police Service remains firm that no officer is above standard operational procedure — regardless of their public profile.
