Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hinted at the formation of a grand political alliance bringing together former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, in what appears to be early manoeuvres aimed at unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna, who was recently ousted from his position as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), signalled the possibility of a broader opposition coalition that would unite leaders from different political backgrounds under a single agenda.
Speaking amid shifting political dynamics within the opposition, the Nairobi Senator suggested that defeating Ruto in 2027 would require a united front rather than fragmented political camps.

His remarks come at a time when realignments are intensifying across the political divide, with leaders positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sifuna’s overtures toward Gachagua are particularly significant given the former Deputy President’s growing influence in the Mt Kenya region following his impeachment and fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Kalonzo, on the other hand, remains a key opposition figure with a strong support base in the Eastern region and longstanding presidential ambitions.
Political analysts say that a coalition bringing together Sifuna, Gachagua and Kalonzo could reshape the 2027 race by consolidating regional voting blocs that have historically determined presidential outcomes.
The developments also come amid internal turbulence within ODM, where Sifuna’s recent removal as Secretary-General signalled deepening divisions within the party.
While he remains an influential voice in national politics, his political future within ODM now appears uncertain, raising questions about whether he could chart a broader national path outside the party’s traditional structure.
President Ruto, elected under the Kenya Kwanza coalition in 2022, has yet to respond directly to the emerging alliance talk.
However, political observers note that early coalition-building efforts are likely to intensify as 2027 draws closer.
With Kenya’s political landscape once again entering a season of recalibration, the coming months are expected to reveal whether the proposed grand alliance will materialise into a formal coalition or remain part of early strategic signalling.
