Students at the Animal Health and Industry Training Institute (AHITI) Nyahururu have staged protests over a prolonged water shortage and deteriorating sanitation conditions on campus. The crisis, which has persisted for nearly two weeks, has left students struggling with unhygienic facilities and a lack of basic necessities.
According to complaints received on Wednesday, the campus toilets have been closed due to severe blockages, forcing students to rely on a limited number of pit latrines. The available alternatives, however, are inadequate to accommodate the student population, creating a significant health hazard.
The students are also voicing frustrations over what they perceive as the administration’s failure to address their concerns. They claim that their attempts to seek solutions have been met with intimidation and that the student council, which should represent their grievances, has been largely ineffective.

One student shared their concerns in a message:
Hi . This regards Ahiti Nyahururu. We have not had water for close to two weeks now, and the toilets are a time bomb. The student council is ornamental and provides no help. When we try to air our views, the intimidation from the administration makes it feel like we don’t pay fees and are at their mercy. They have closed all the toilets since they are blocked, and we are using pit latrines, which are not even enough. Kindly address this issue on your platform."
The ongoing crisis has raised questions about the institution’s preparedness to provide basic amenities despite the fees students pay. Many feel that their welfare is being overlooked, and they demand urgent intervention from the administration and relevant authorities to restore water supply and improve sanitation.
As the unrest continues, students are calling for accountability and immediate action to resolve the crisis before it escalates further. The administration is yet to issue an official response regarding the matter.
