Police in Kakamega County have launched investigations following two separate deaths reported in Lurambi Sub-county, raising fresh concerns over rising insecurity in the area.
In the first incident, a night security guard stationed at a petrol station near the Lurambi shopping center was attacked and killed by a gang of robbers during the night. The brutal assault occurred just a short distance from the local police station, prompting outrage from residents who questioned the effectiveness of security patrols in the area.
“The guard was ambushed at night, a short distance from the police station,” said Evans Shimonyo, a local resident.

Hours later, in a separate but nearby location, the body of another man was discovered abandoned along the Kakamega–Webuye highway, near the Shimalavandu area, approximately two kilometers from the first crime scene.
“The body was found abandoned along the roadside in Shimalavandu during late-night hours,” police officers reported.
Kakamega Central Police Commander Vincent Cherutich confirmed the two deaths and said that investigations are ongoing. He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police as efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice continue.
“We are treating both incidents with utmost urgency. Our teams are following leads to establish the motive and those behind these killings,” said Cherutich.
The incidents have sparked public outcry, with residents staging spontaneous protests and demanding enhanced security operations. They expressed fear and frustration over the increasing crime rate, particularly during the night.
Community leaders are now calling on county authorities and national security agencies to deploy more officers and improve surveillance in the region to restore confidence and ensure safety.
