A heated FKF Premier League encounter between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC at Gusii Stadium ended in chaos on Saturday after violent clashes erupted among rival fans, leaving at least 72 people injured.

According to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the incident occurred following Gor Mahia’s 1-0 victory, which came courtesy of a second-half goal. What began as tension between supporters in adjacent seating sections — Shade G9 for Shabana FC fans and Shade G10 for Gor Mahia fans — quickly escalated into physical confrontations, including the throwing of projectiles.

In an official statement, FKF expressed deep concern over the violent scenes and confirmed receiving hospital reports from four medical facilities in Kisii County. A breakdown of injuries revealed:

  • Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH): 72 total cases, including 2 suspected skull fractures, 2 limb fractures, 3 deep cuts, and several minor injuries.
  • Ram Hospital: 14 fans treated for minor injuries.
  • Hema Hospital: 5 minor injury cases.
  • Christamarianne Hospital: 1 minor injury.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. FKF condemned the violence, emphasizing that football should unite rather than divide.

“Football must remain a sport that brings people together — not one that puts lives at risk,” the FKF statement read. “The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remains a top priority for the federation.”

Police and emergency responders acted swiftly to restore order and treat the injured. Law enforcement officials have since launched an investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the unrest and identify those responsible.

FKF also called on the media and public to avoid spreading unverified reports, particularly those alleging deaths, and confirmed that disciplinary measures would follow once investigations conclude.

“We are working closely with the relevant authorities… Let us all work together to protect the image, integrity, and safety of Kenyan football,” FKF added.

The violence has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a critical match in the league, raising serious concerns about fan behavior, stadium security, and crisis response mechanisms.
