Uhuru joins regional leaders for Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, joined regional leaders and international dignitaries in Kampala for the swearing-in ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

In a statement released by his office, Kenyatta congratulated Museveni as he began another term in office following his re-election in Uganda’s January 2026 General Election.

“Kenyatta extended his warm congratulations and best wishes to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he begins another term in office, wishing him good health, wisdom, and continued prosperity in leading the people of Uganda,” the statement read.

The former Head of State also reaffirmed the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Kenya and Uganda, highlighting the longstanding cooperation shared by the two neighbouring countries.

“Kenyatta also reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties, mutual cooperation, and longstanding friendship that unites Kenya and Uganda,” the statement added.

The inauguration ceremony attracted more than 50 international delegations, including African heads of state, diplomats, and senior government officials from across the continent and beyond.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Kenyatta attended a state dinner hosted by Museveni at the Speke Resort Convention Centre, where regional leaders and foreign dignitaries gathered in preparation for the event.

Kenyatta arrived in Uganda on Monday and was received by Ambassador Katureebe Tayebwa alongside Ambassador Kipkosgei Toroitich.

Museveni’s inauguration marks the beginning of another presidential term, extending his decades-long leadership in Uganda.

The event further underscored the close political and economic relationship between Kenya and Uganda, two of East Africa’s largest trading partners whose cooperation spans trade, infrastructure development, regional security, and integration under the East African Community.
