The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced revised fuel prices following a six-hour consultative meeting with public transport stakeholders over the sharp rise in diesel costs that sparked nationwide transport disruptions.

In the latest review released Monday night, EPRA reduced the price of diesel by Ksh10.06 per litre, while the price of kerosene was increased by Ksh38.60 per litre.

The regulator said the adjustments were informed by concerns raised by players in the public transport sector regarding the widening price gap between diesel and kerosene, which authorities fear could fuel cases of fuel adulteration.

According to EPRA, the new pricing structure is intended to reduce the incentive for the illegal mixing of fuels, particularly after diesel prices hit record highs in the latest monthly review.

“The adjustment seeks to minimise the risk of adulteration arising from the significant price disparity between diesel and kerosene,” EPRA stated.

The move comes amid mounting pressure from matatu operators and other transport stakeholders who had protested the recent increase in fuel prices, arguing that the high cost of diesel had made operations unsustainable.

Earlier this month, EPRA raised diesel prices by Ksh46.29 per litre and petrol prices by Ksh16.65 per litre, attributing the increases to the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on global oil prices.

The latest price revision is expected to ease pressure on the transport sector and possibly restore public transport services that had been paralysed in several parts of the country following the strike by matatu operators.
