Man Accused of Stock Theft Dies in Police Custody in Kisumu

A man arrested over allegations of stock theft has reportedly died by suicide while in police custody at Katito Police Station in Kisumu County.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, has sparked fresh concerns over the treatment of suspects in detention.

According to a police report filed at the station, the man was brought in on Friday morning by the area chief of Agoro West Location. Less than two hours later, he was found dead inside the station’s holding cell.

Officers say he had used a vest to hang himself from the metal grill on the cell door.

Police constables Juliana Koka and Andrew Okong’o, who were on duty at the time, were alerted by Sergeant Nixon Lukwa after he heard a disturbance from the cells.

Upon rushing to the scene, the officers found the man’s lifeless body suspended by the neck.

Attempts to cut the vest and rescue him were unsuccessful.

“Efforts were made to rescue him by cutting the vest, but unfortunately he succumbed to injuries,” the incident report states.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nyakach, along with the Muhoroni Sub-County Police Commander and a crime scene team from Kisumu, visited the station and secured the area for further investigation.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is expected to take over the matter as scrutiny mounts over the circumstances of the suspect’s death.
