A man identified as Godwin Wafula, popularly known as “Potea,” has been found dead after reportedly drowning in River Kuywa in Matisi, Bungoma County, while attempting to flee from police officers.
According to witnesses, Wafula jumped into the river on Thursday after abandoning his vehicle during a police pursuit linked to the alleged transportation of chang’aa.
Residents said the deceased was trying to evade arrest when he plunged into the river and disappeared beneath the water.

Efforts to locate him immediately after the incident proved unsuccessful, prompting a massive search operation involving local residents.
After hours of combing the river, search teams recovered Wafula’s body, bringing a tragic end to the operation.
The discovery sparked anger among residents, who questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and demanded answers from authorities.
In protest, irate residents blocked the busy Bungoma–Webuye highway, disrupting transport and business activities in the area.
Demonstrators called for investigations into the events that led to Wafula’s death, insisting that the public deserves a clear account of what transpired during the police chase.
Motorists using the highway were forced to seek alternative routes as the protest caused significant traffic congestion.
Police are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the incident and the allegations surrounding the transportation of chang’aa.
The body of the deceased was moved to a local mortuary pending postmortem examinations and further investigations.
The incident has sparked debate among residents, with some calling for restraint during police operations while others urged members of the public to comply with law enforcement officers to avoid such tragic outcomes.
Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the circumstances that led to Wafula’s death as tensions remain high in the area.
