A cloud of grief has engulfed Kapchumba village in Emgwen, Nandi County, following the sudden death of a Form Four student who collapsed while participating in a community football match.
The deceased, identified as Billy Kipyego, was a student at Tulon Secondary School and was among players taking part in the local football games when the tragic incident occurred.
According to reports, Billy was actively involved in the match when he attempted to control the ball with his chest. Moments later, he suddenly collapsed on the pitch and became unresponsive, leaving fellow players, spectators, and organizers in shock.

Efforts were immediately made to save his life as he was rushed to a nearby health facility for emergency treatment. However, despite the swift response, the student was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The heartbreaking incident has left his family, classmates, teachers, and the wider Kapchumba community struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young life described by many as promising and full of potential.
Billy was preparing to sit his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations later this year and was widely regarded as a hardworking student with a bright future ahead of him.
Friends and community members have taken to social media to mourn the teenager, sharing emotional tributes and messages of condolence to the bereaved family.
Mahlon Murgor, who was among those who tried to help after Billy collapsed, expressed his sorrow, saying they did everything possible to save him.
“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the loss of our brother, Billy Kipyego. We tried to save his life and searched for an ambulance, but despite all our efforts, God had other plans. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Other mourners described the death as shocking and difficult to comprehend, noting that Billy had interacted with friends and family normally before the incident.
As the community continues to mourn, funeral preparations are underway. Family members and well-wishers have launched a fundraising initiative to help cater for burial expenses and support the grieving family during this difficult period.
